How to Manage Heat and Ventilation in Your Greenhouse
Heat is the big challenge in India
While greenhouses are often about keeping plants warm, in much of India the bigger challenge is stopping them from overheating. A greenhouse can get dangerously hot in summer — here’s how to manage it.
Ventilate, ventilate, ventilate
Good airflow is your most important tool. Open vents, doors, and roll-up sides to let hot air escape and fresh air circulate. On hot days, keep the greenhouse well-ventilated from morning onward.
Use shade in peak summer
During the harshest sun, a shade net over or inside the greenhouse cuts heat and protects plants from scorching. Many gardeners add shade cloth for the summer months and remove it later.
Watch the temperature
Keep a thermometer inside so you can see how hot it gets. If it climbs too high for your plants, increase ventilation and shading. Plants wilt and suffer fast in trapped heat.
Water wisely
Plants in a warm greenhouse dry out quickly, so check moisture often, especially in summer. Water in the morning or evening, and avoid wetting foliage in intense heat.
Damp down to cool
On very hot days, lightly wetting the floor (“damping down”) raises humidity and helps cool the air through evaporation — a simple, effective trick.
Manage the monsoon too
During heavy rain, ensure good drainage and airflow to prevent fungal disease in the humid, enclosed space. Ventilation matters in the monsoon as much as the heat.
Adjust with the seasons
Open up fully in summer for cooling, and close up more in cooler weather to retain warmth. Managing your greenhouse with the seasons keeps plants thriving year-round.
